The Barrow & District Disability Association (BDDA) is one of Furness’s longest-serving community organisations, dedicated to supporting disabled people, their families, and carers across the peninsula. Based at its welcoming centre on School Street in Barrow, BDDA has been part of local life for more than four decades, offering practical help, social connection, and a strong voice for disability rights in the area. The association is run independently as a self-help charity, shaped by the experiences of disabled people themselves and supported by a committed team of staff and volunteers.
At the heart of BDDA’s work is a genuine commitment to improving everyday life for disabled residents. Their Disablement Advice and Benefits Service provides clear, friendly guidance on welfare rights, benefits, and entitlements—offering reassurance during what can often be a confusing process. The association also provides valuable mobility support, including short-term wheelchair hire and access to RADAR keys, giving local people greater independence when navigating their communities.
BDDA’s community centre is a hub of activity, hosting regular social groups, coffee mornings, and events that help reduce isolation and bring people together in a safe, accessible environment. Many residents enjoy the opportunity to meet new friends, learn new skills, or simply relax with others who understand their experiences. The centre also offers a programme of learning opportunities, including computer and digital skills courses, helping people gain confidence and improve their future prospects.
Wellbeing is another important part of BDDA’s work. The association offers complementary therapies such as massage and relaxation treatments, supporting both physical and emotional health. They also provide advice on improving accessibility in homes, workplaces, and public spaces across Furness, helping local organisations become more inclusive.
For anyone living with a disability—or caring for someone who is—BDDA remains a trusted and compassionate local resource. It is a place to turn for guidance, connection, independence, and support, right at the heart of our Furness community.
