Homeless Support for Young People

Project John Ltd is a voluntary supporting housing project for young people aged 16-25 in Barrow in Furness.

Project John was set up in 1993, and since then we have housed over 500 young people.

Project John offers young people, safe, decent supported accommodation.
Young people are allocated a support worker, they will work together to ensure young people can sustain their tenancy and live independently.

Project John has 18 units of accommodation all in Barrow in Furness.

What support do we offer?
The support is provided by our Tenant Support Workers who are experienced, good listeners and committed. Support is really about helping young people to help themselves, it’s about development, learning, building relationships, skills, confidence, hopes and aspirations.
It may be helping out with benefits and budgeting, someone to talk to, finding training or education, life skill and learning to live independently. We offer housing and support for up to two years, then offering them a resettlement package that is tailored to the individual needs, based on their ability to manage a tenancy, cope with independent living and resettle into the local community. The aim is to reduce the tenancy failure rate and promote the re-engagement of young people with existing support structures to enable the development of practical skills alongside emotional independence.

We also provide tenancy training course to all perspective and current tenants, delivered by our experienced staff and encourage young people to consider some key issues of being a good tenant.
The course has four main themes: Finances, Health & Safety, Home Management, and Rights & Responsibilities.
